DRIVER RESPONSIBILITY PROGRAM - SURCHARGE

The Driver Responsibility Program authorizes the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to assess surcharges based on certain traffic offenses that have occurred on or after September 1, 2003. Surcharge notices are mailed to the address on file with DPS; therefore, it is very important to report any address change to DPS. DPS contracts with Municipal Services Bureau – MSB to collect surcharges.

A surcharge is an administrative fee charged to a driver based on the number of points or traffic ticket / traffic citation convictions on your driving record. If you have both points and convictions on your driving record, you will receive separate surcharges for each offense – a surcharge for the points and a surcharge for each conviction. The surcharges are applied in addition to other fees, i.e., administrative, SR-22, required for other administrative actions.

It is, therefore, very important to have your traffic ticket issues resolved by a traffic ticket attorney knowledgeable in traffic ticket matters. If not resolved properly, the case (depending on the offense) could result in a conviction, a judgement of guilty being entered on your driving record and an assessment of SURCHARGES.
